Title: registration problems?
Post by: brynn on November 30, 2016, 10:10:57 AM
Hi Friends,
If you have any trouble registering, you can use the Contact Form ("Contact" tab) to ask for help.

Note that for some reason, email addresses which use the gmx.de domain (the part after the @) cannot receive email from this forum.  That means if you use such an email address, you can't receive the activation email.  It's probably better if you just use a different email address.  But if you still want to use it, go ahead and register, then use the Contact form to let me know, and I'll activate your account.

All best  :)

It's a server side email server setting that needs to be adapted for gmx (and some other web mail services).
Something with the sending mail server confirming that the sent email comes from where it claims to come from. We had to do that for our own mail server a couple of months ago, when it didn't work anymore. You should ping the server admin for this.

Moini, do you mean the gmx.de server admin?

Our host (mikey) tells me it's a common spam domain.  So maybe they can't confirm us because we've got some kind of block related to spam??  I'm not sure.  We've concluded that the problem is on their side, but I didn't think of trying to contact them.

If we were going to remain as the official forum, I guess it would be worth tying to contact them.  We'll just have to be mindful of this, when we set up the new forum.  Maybe the new host won't have any problems, who knows.

No, I mean that the mail server at inkscapecommunity.com needs reconfiguring.

It needs to use some different settings, so all other mail servers will accept emails coming from it.
gmx (and many more) classifies mails coming from here as spam, and doesn't accept them.
It may be a 'spam domain', but it's a widely used service in Germany.

It also classified emails coming from our own mailserver as spam. It doesn't any more, after we made that change to our own server (so I was able to send emails to another Inkscape project member).

Would you happen to know which options need to be changed?  I have access to a lot of stuff, but I might not have access to that.  But whether I can change them or I need my host to do it, I would need to know what options need to be changed.  Because as I mentioned, I already informed him, and he thinks it's on their end.

You can point the admin to this FAQ: https://postmaster.gmx.com/en/error-messages
When an email was rejected by gmx, they send a message with an error code back. He'd need to look up the error code he received in that list. Also, if one eliminates all reasons given in the list, it should work.

I'm not a mail server specialist... but this is basically the thing we did when we encountered the same problem.
