Summary: A tutorial for those with intermediate to advanced skills.

[Edit -- Note this tutorial is a bit outdated.  Starting with version 0.92, we have the Gradient Mesh tool  :grm:  which can create this effect, probably better and easier.  However, the technique presented in this tutorial still does work, and it could possibly still be useful under certain circumstances.)
