Title: GUI tiny on 1920x1200 monitor
Post by: mksa on November 06, 2017, 02:08:47 AM
HI there,
I thought I'd try out Inkscape (using xara at the moment) - the GUI icons/menu are so small I can't read/see some of them.
Inkscape is installed on my win 8.1 laptop with a 3200x1800 display and I have my 24" Dell 1920x1200 monitor connected to it.
On the laptop, the GUI is really tiny - I sort of expected that - but when dragging the window over to the Dell, things remain the same size.
Can someone please advise me?

Welcome to the forum!

I can't explain why the Inkscape window doesn't get larger on the smaller screen.  I'm not sure if it's possible for a computer to use one resolution on one screen and another resolution on another screen.  Maybe, I really don't know.  Do you know if the screens use 2 different resolutions (resolution, not size)?  Do other programs look different on your 2 screens?

I've heard that with the next major version release, Inkscape will work on the high resolution screens.  I'm not sure if it's built into the development version yet.  If so, you could just install that version.  Hopefully someone else will post before too long.

Thanks for your reply.
As stated, my laptop is 320x1800 and the monitor 1920x1280. Xara, Coreldraw,Photoshop etc all scale depending which screen the app is on.

If that's the case, then it sounds like the problem is on Inkscape's side.  You could try the developement version.  Or wait a bit until someone who knows more about that posts.

I suppose there's no way to open it on the smaller screen from the start?  I'm not very tech oriented, so I'm just thinking of things I would try.  Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

As far as I know larger screens will get a much better support -inkscape will be compiled with a newer version of gtk- so that means 0.93 -or maybe the mentioned development version. Not sure if that's updated already nor can test it on my 1366/768 screen.
Should it respond to dual monitors of differentresolution? Even know less about that.
Maybe try asking at the developers at the irc @freenode #inkscape-devel or file a bug report in the  bug tracker (https://launchpad.net/inkscape) if there isn't one existing already of the same problem.

(I know there are already bug reports about the dual screen issues.)
