Welcome to the forum!

I don't have any access to Illustrator, so I can't test.  Do I understand from your question that you don't have access to Illustrator either, but that you want to make sure your files will open properly there?

I don't understand what kind of explanation you need.  Can you please explain what is your experience, which has stimulated these questions?  Often we need to see "the big picture" to understand how to answer.

This would beg the question - What makes you worried that there will be a problem with opening Inkscape SVG files in Illustrator?

If you can't give us any context to Inkscape, maybe you could ask in an Illustrator forum?

By any chance, have you used Inkscape to edit SVG file (or files) which were created originally in Illustrator?

Eps files are print-ready and supposedly not for editing. In addition it's not inkscape's core format, using cairo (?) for the saving and doubt it would preserve group structure in a useable way. Just guessing from how inkscape can open pdf files (with ghostcript) that the structure can get messy.

On the other hand inkscape's main format svg "should" work best with illustrator.
Except the fact illustrator is not intended to be up to date with the svg specs. If you used any kind of filtering in your file, probably you'll end up with embedded raster doubles.

You asked about the grouping structure -"should be" intact... inksape's layers are technically groups -because layers are an off-specs feature-.
My best bet is they are handled as simple groups by illustrator but I cannot check (don't have illustrator).

If you take the gradient straight to Illustrator via SVG file, I would guess there would be no problem.  With an EPS conversion, I couldn't even guess.
