Thank's, couldn't get it to work -still, needs some adjustments as now the proportions are off. Original image is a portrait format A3 sized image, not  a square one.

Ok, so it's distorted?

I'm pretty sure it's something in the Deviant Art URLs, which prevent the forum from automatically resizing them.  Because you've posted huge images which are hosted on OCA, which are handled properly.

For Deviant Art URLs, or images from anywhere which won't be posted (because they exceed our size limits otherwise), you can manually add the bbcode width and height tag.

change

Code: [Select]
[img]address[/img]

to

Code: [Select]
[img width=600 height=600]address[/img]

Don't have to stick with 600, but it seems to be a reasonable choice.  Based on my earlier testing, it seems to be around 3700 when the limits kick in (depending on the particular image size).  I guess to avoid distortion, you'd have to calculate the right values.

Just now, I tried using the height code, without the width, but it didn't post.  But that could be because the width is over the limit.  So for this image, going over the limits in both directions, you'd have to calculate.  Below, I just made it half original size.

However, if the fix I'm going to try works, as far as I understand, all images will respond.  Even SVG, which currently aren't affected.  All that's left to do, before I try it, is decide on what the best size should be.  600 seems good to me, because for height, 600 fits perfectly in my browser window.

Any comments, suggestions, requests?

Oh!  This is interesting.  I divided the width and height by 2, and entered that into the bbcode width and height.  Then the forum took THAT, and resized it!  I don't remember the width I entered, but the height was 2480.  And the forum changed to 600!

What a crazy way to handle images!

I'll start working on the new fix, using 600.  But if something different is needed or wanted, we can change.  Cross fingers!   :xf1:

By the way, it will not be retroactive.  When I make the change, it will just go forward from there.

Ok, I have the fix installed for the Aqua theme.  But it's still not taking this DA image.  Let me try some others.

Here's one of the smaller filters posters on OCA.  Doesn't look like it's getting resized....  (I used 800 x 600 as a starting place.)

Edit
Oops, now it should work.

The large images from openclipart were actually svg-s. They generate thumbnails at a fixed 2400 px size. If landscape, then 2400 px for width, is portrait, 2400 px for height. That's why I embedded the svg-s instead the png thumbnails. Maybe they are handled differently?
Like, they are still hosted outside just a viewbox is added according to the size -if anything.

I embed 800 px wide images at my blog which fits the template the best on my screen. 800 px seems good on the forums, more so openclipart also generates thumbnails at 800 px automatically so you don't need to make a new query by editing the url to the 600 px size if you want an exact match with no resizing/further hosting resized thumbnails by the forum.

Yes, SVGs are (if I like how this fix works, then SVGs 'were') handled differently.  The setting I was using in SMF does not recognize SVG as an image format.  But this one is supposed to.

Had the wrong file before (identical name, different folder  :@@:).  New try (800 x 600)

Using something smaller for testing!  3000 x 3000  Well, shorter, but wider.

Anyway.....   :xf2:

Hey!   After a couple of refreshes, looks like it took effect!  (For Aqua theme only at the moment.)

Aahh, but we can't get the full size by clicking  :(

I think getting the full size is important though....

Edit
And I was wrong -- it's affecting all the images ever posted!
See screenshot of the filters poster now!  (I'm going to undo this right away!)

Ok, at the moment, the new fix gone, and we're back to the old setup, except instead of 1200 x 600, it's 800 x0600.

Test:  3000 x 3000

Ok, seems embedding da images works this time. However the handling of the same sized images is inconsistent.

tried to post
Code: [Select]
[url=https://lazururh.deviantart.com/art/Japanese-castle-715158826?ga_submit_new=10%3A1510717539][img]https://orig00.deviantart.net/380d/f/2017/318/a/e/japanese_castle_by_lazururh-dbtsc2y.png[/img][/url]

here.

Both images are of the same size -supposedly- but one gets an img width/height tag automatically, while the other doesn't.
