Title: Shift-Click causes "internal error"
Post by: Cindy Skillman on April 08, 2018, 07:51:10 PM
I'm trying to do the "shapes tutorial" included under the help tab on the Inkscape program. The instructions say to use "shift-click" to close the circle segments. Every time I do this, the program makes the circle whole, but then gives me an error message and shuts itself down. This happens with squares and stars also. I haven't gotten to spirals. Is this a bug I should report, or am I doing something wrong?

I've just discovered that the same thing happens when I "alt-click" the star handle to discard randomization.

Welcome to the forum!

Hhmm, I see you're using version 0.91.  I actually still have that version, so I can test and find out if I can reproduce that.  But even if I can, developers will not be interested in a bug report, because the current version of Inkscape is 0.92.3.

Would you like to try upgrading, and find out if the problem still happens there?  Or do you have some reason to be using 0.91?

I'll test, and I'll be right back.  (Oh, and the tutorial itself has probably been upgraded too.)

Interesting - I can't reproduce that.  I'm using Windows 7 though, so it's not a perfect comparison.

I notice that the tutorial does not say that the mouse has to be over top of one of the round handles, before the Shift + click will work.  But it doesn't work at all for me, unless my mouse is over a handle.

Do you find that too?  Is your mouse over the handle, when it causes Inkscape to crash?

One more comment.  There's a button on the control bar that will make the circle whole again.  For rectangles, there's a button to make the corners square again.  And for stars....  it's a little different for stars.  There's a button that reverts the star to the default, which is the 5 point star.  You have to use the spinboxes to remove the randomization.

As far as I remember, updating as suggested in Brynn's first post should solve the issue.

Thanks, Moyni and Brynn! Yes, I was mousing over the little square. It performed the expected operation, and then the program closed... every time. And yes, I did find the way to reset the shape to its normal corners in the bar above. I wondered if it was a function of my having downloaded the earlier version. I watched a vid of a guy who was talking about inkscape (that's how I heard about it), and he recommended downloading the earlier version. I'm not quite clear why he felt that way. I guess I'll go ahead and try upgrading. The shift-click thing isn't that big a deal... I just basically obsess about dumb stuff sometimes.  :-$ It ought to have occurred to me that the team wouldn't want to fix bugs in older versions. Win 10 is irritating and bewildering in so many ways.  :???:   :-D Thanks so much!

Hmm... I did update to the .92, and that seems to have fixed the problem. Quick question, though... I can't seem to find how to update my information to fix that on my profile.
