Title: carnival mask contest
Post by: brynn on March 03, 2014, 05:19:13 AM
Hi Friends,
This is our first contest!  I had started a challenge, a while ago, "draw a mask".  At the time, I was thinking more about Halloween masks.  But when I started to look for a model, I was amazed at the huge variety of carnival masks.  So that has inspired our first contest -- Draw a Carnival Mask.

I found all these silhouettes (below) of different carnival mask shapes.  So you can use any of these shapes, if you like.  Or if you want to come up with your own shape, that's fine too.

Really, the only rules are 1) it has to be a mask associated with the Spring carnival season -- in the US, often associated with Mardi Gras, although many different ethnic groups around the world have their own version; and 2) you should use Inkscape for most of the work.

If you'd like to post works in progress, you're welcome to put them in this topic.  Or if you want to ask for help with drawing your image, you can do that here as well.  Only finished images should be uploaded to the album -- "Carnival Mask contest" album.  (If you need to show a screenshot, for wip or support, upload it to your personal album.)

All these silhouettes come from Shutterstock (http://www.shutterstock.com/s/%22carnival+mask%22/search.html).  And if you need inspiration for what to draw, you'll find more than you could imagine at that link!  (Oops....actually, I won't be able to upload those mask shapes until later -- I've got a big download in progress....I'll post them asap.)

PS -- Oh, I just see on the news, that Brazil's carnival season is in full swing, right now!  Good timing  :D

Hey, it seems we ran out of carneval season already, easter should be next -how about easter egg challenges?
Maybe someone with an eggbot might join?

Anyway, just came through this one by accident.
For those shutterstock not inspiring enough, check some fine crafted wooden masks by german artist Adrian Burger. (http://www.maskenschnitzer.com/index.html)

Just finished my mask for the challenge/contest.

There could be so many things improved on it but this seemed it took the reasonable time to finish -any finetuning or detail adding would take on forever with my current workflow.
Originally the svg is 7,8 MB in size.

Lazur, can I use your bus? mask? I'd use it as an avatar for awhile in a couple of places but I wanted to get your permission first.

I never realized it before, Steve, but Lazur's mask does somewhat resemble the av you're currently using here!

Hi Steve!

Feel free to use it as an avatar.

Since the original svg is provided too, it is quite open.
Not public domain though, because I don't want it to be sold for money.
How could anyone sell public domain images anyway.
