OH!  The coil winder -- do you use it to make motors?  When I was a kid, one of my cousins got a little construction kit for xmas, where he could make little motors with coils like that.  He built a "lie detector" machine, which somehow thought I was a liar, before anyone even asked me a question, lol.  All I had to do was hold the wires, and I was busted, lol!

Hi.

I have used blown out eggs but have 'switched' to another much better option; ceramic eggs from Hobby-Lobby. Eggs
They are 1.67us$ each - main advantage on using these is I don't have to eat a lot of omelettes!

"La Bella' takes a long time to plot - around half an hour - as there are many lines where the pen has to be lifted going from one to the other.

You can not use paint brush in the eggbot, but the "evil Mad Scientist Laboratories - which developed and sells the eggbot - have a Water-Color-Bot based on the same electronics as the eggbot.
On the eggbot you can mount a diamond tip engraver Diamond engraver or a how wax accessory Hot Wax Acc. to make 'kistka' eggs.
The "ballerina" is split into two, I normally let the Eggbot draw the hatching first and then the outlines. I keep these on different layers.
I normally 'optimize' my plots by trying to avoid pen lift/pen down operation which takes a lot of time.
To get the hatching to be efficient most hatching is one single line inside the object.
To create the hatching I select the (closed) path - then duplicate and apply Inset twice,
(This way I avoid the hatching to 'ruin' the outlines). I then add path effects - hatching (rough).
After this I run the Inkscape extension Eggbot - preset hatch.
(This extension is useful even if you have not got the eggbot - there are a nice "swirl" extension as well - worth trying! )

Here is what part of the ballerina looks like;
(Image removed from quote.)

Up until now I have not treated the eggs after they are plotted but that's one of the topics on my agenda.
That's one of the things I like about the eggbot - you always have options trying something new, as I am a 'techie'
type rather than 'artistic' I really like the technical part of the eggbot.
Just made an addon for my eggbot - a "coil winder" Coil-Winder.

Would I recommend you get an eggbot? You bet! Tons of fun!

Hi.

I have to admit that I never used the hatching option, but did you try to fill in the shapes in another way?

Like this.
(Something similar to that heart cutting project.)
It would reduce the length of the line -reduce ink and time, and
reduce small turns -reduce more time by less slowing down at the amplitudes.
The only flaw it might have is that more ink would appear along the "axis" and at sharp corners, and not along the edge of the shape.

Hi Lazur

Smart hatching! I have not tried this as the hatching option is more or less "automatic".
How do you go about to create this pattern?
The plot time is directly proportional to the line length but usually I want more ink, not less - to get good coverage.
Sometimes I plot the same pattern up to six times to get 'dense' color.

Thanks for the tip. Might try this once I know how.  :)

Hi Ragnar

It was made manually, though it could be covered by by an algorith more or less I guess.
The idea came from the way I would ink such shapes with a pen on paper.
There, staying between the outlines is as important to me as the good coverage.
And, drawing parallel lines is much safer than fast turns next to the borders.

Automating the method a bit: by insetting/dynamic offsetting of the path, you can draw a "center-line" of the shape.
As those are parallel, there will be islands at the end, that need to be connected. This line and the original path's interpolation would produce a good source to the fill theoretically.
With the heart-shaped spiral the distance between those were sorted evenly, in this example above I tried to connect them with a small turn.

If it was about the consistent fill, then maybe a straight hatching would be the best, perpendicular to that centerline -as used in embroidery and graffiti.

Got 2 eggs uploaded to contest

http://inkscapecommunity.com/ic_gallery/displayimage.php?album=39&pid=319#top_display_media

Eventually I hope to have them displayed in some kind of grouping, together, like in a basket or something.  But for now, they're hovering in mid-air!

And hopefully, more eggs to come  :D

Found this egg painting challenge:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?366160-Easter-egg-painting-challenge

Way over my head yet as I have never used nodes in blender, but an original blend file is attached to the thread, worth looking at.

Can the blend file be opened without having Blender installed?

How do I install Blender?
To install Blender, download the appropriate package for your platform. The Windows version comes with an optional self-extracting installer, for other operating systems you can simply unpack the compressed file to the location of your choice.

Another Easter on it's way, let's see if I could improve a bit on this:

-Made with these new filters.-

This is now using overlapping, so no more of those rendering gaps.

Cool!  I'm planning to make some more egg designs for the coloring book pages.  Now that I have my mouse working, won't take too long.
