Title: Grid Editing
Post by: Charbee on August 07, 2017, 10:00:24 AM
Hi,

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I am doing something wrong. When I tried to edit the Rectangular grid spacing by going to Edit > Preferences > Interface > Grids, nothing changes. Is this a bug to report or am I missing a step?

I tried to change the Spacing X and Spacing Y settings as well as switching to "Show dots instead of lines". There is not an Apply nor Save step that I can see.  After making the changes that I want, nothing happens.

I have Inkscape 0.92 64-bit version installed on a Windows 10 system. Thank you in advance

Yeah, Inkscape Preferences doesn't have a Save or Apply button.  Whatever you change there, it immediately is changed.  Except there are a few settings which will tell you that you must restart Inkscape, before it takes effect.

I have not used those options for grids in Inkscape Preferences.  And I'm not sure how they are different from Document Properties > Grids tab.  I guess it must make the change globally, to all files, from Inkscape Preferences; while Document Properties changes it only for that file.

Also, you have to enable grids, before you can see them.  Try View menu > Page Grid.  And if you use Document Properies, there are some controls there for whether the grids are displayed or not.  (And there's a key shortcut as well.)

And  those apply to the grids which are used in Inkscape as helpers or guides.  They aren't actually part of the image.  If you want grids which are made of nodes and paths, you can either draw them yourself, or else there are some extensions which will draw grids.

I have Grid checked in View.
I try to edit the Grid spacing in Edit > Preferences. Nothing changed.  Thank you for pointing out the differences between Document Properties and Preferences. It seems that you have to change the Gird spacing in Document Properties. They conflict otherwise and the Preferences do not override the Document settings.

It's possible I don't have a correct understanding about the Inkscape Preferences options.  I'll see if I can find something.

I found this in the manual:

Quote
The default Grid parameters can be modified in the Grids section of the Inkscape Preferences dialog.

So I think what that means is that if you open a new blank document, whatever modifications you made in Inkscape Preferences will show up.  But if you're looking at a file where you created custom grid using Document Properties, it won't override that.  It sounds like it only overrides the default grid, not the custom grids.
