Title: Windows Update Does not like inkscape
Post by: Rob_mc_1 on February 28, 2018, 02:08:52 PM
Hi.

I was installing a recent update to windows 10. It is on the windows insider program so I know it is a beta version and bugs can happen but I was wondering why it might not like Inkscape.

Welcome to the forum!

While I am a Windows user, not for much longer.  I disliked Windows 10 so much, I went back to Windows 7, and I'm planning to make the switch to Linux.  I have never heard of this feature or program called Windows Insider.

Until I've had a chance to investigate what that program is, I would suggest either not going through with the update, or uninstall Inkscape, and reinstall after the update.

I'll have time to do some research shortly, and I'll post back when I've learned more about it.

I notice you have Inkscape open in your screenshot.  One of the many things I didn't like about Windows 10, was that it shuts down and locks the user out while it goes to get updates.  So I'm curious how you manage to have.....well, have the computer turned on at all during the update.  In any case, if there is some way to get an update while you're still logged on, maybe try just closing Inkscape while you do it?  Maybe it's something about having it open??

I'll post again later.

Ok, it looks like Windows Insider program, is more of a program in the sense of a sequence activities which can be followed, as opposed to actual software which performs a certain function.  Like "get with the program" or "church program" or the program that you get when you go to a play, telling about the acts and intermissions, etc..

It's designed to let you download and try out the next new Windows version or new features, as far as I can tell, and asks for your feed back.  And there's some kind of community where you can teach others how to use the new features (or learn how too, I guess).

As to why it doesn't like Inkscape, I couldn't say.  I really have no idea.  Honestly I'm still stuck on how you got the updates without having to log off.

When you installed Inkscape, did you get it from the Windows Store?  It seems like I heard that you can't use the update feature with that version.  Or the update feature is broken.....or something.

Does Inkscape seem to be working?  If your vesion of Inkscape doesn't work, maybe it recognizes that and doesn't want the Insider program be broken by it????

If your version of Inkscape appears to be working, then all I could suggest is to do what the error message says.  Either uninstall Inkscape, and reinstall after the updates; or skip the updates.

Actually just looking at your screenshot again.  Maybe the fact the updates stopped in the middle of Windows Insider has nothing to do with the non-compatibility of Inkscape with the update?  I guess I don't really know.

I'm not sure either. I did uninstall Inkscape and now the install in complaining about a Novell Client which does not exist. I'm assuming this more a problem with the installer. I only posted it on here because I was wondering if there was a component you were using that is no longer supported.

Does the error message still indicate that it is Windows Insider that doesn't like the Novell Client?

I'm not sure if it would be a problem with the installer.....probably not the Windows Update installer.  I would guess probably more of a problem with Windows Insider, being a beta version.

You could try uninstalling Windows Insider, and reinstall Inkscape.  Then try the updates again.  That could at least give you another clue.

As with Brynn I too have reverted to Win 7 after MSs draaconiaan and recent massive win10 update.
There is much wrong with that update and evven Windows help people admitted they had to revert to eaarlier Operating system versions.
The only thing to do is as Brynn says try and rollback any Win10 oarts you can reinstal Inkscape . But really clear out previous installs, remnants and such (of Inkscape as well), and restart the pc before a reinstal  to get a good run at the fresh instal.
