How to save to jpg, tiff, gif in inkscape?

Hello Everyone!

First, I want to say that I am new to Inkscape. It seems like a good program and I look forward to using it. I am starting a logo design business and I was wondering if this is the ideal program to use.

My main question however is how do I convert to raster images? I have already installed imagemagick and I could not find any useful information on how to use it and inkscape together. I really need to be able to provide my clients with jpg, tiff, bmp, gif (I know how to export in png) as well as ai and eps files.

BTW, in case I cannot use Imagemagick for this, can I use a program like Xara to import an ai or eps file and convert it to these formats?

I'd appreciate any feedback anyone can give me.

Welcome to the forum!

The only raster format Inkscape exports natively is PNG.  There is an extension to export JPGs.  (https://github.com/giacmir/Inkscape-JPEG-export-extension)  But for the BMPs, GIFs and TIFFs, you'll need to use a raster editor.

You can save as  EPS in Inkscape, although you'll need to install Ghostscript, as far as I understand.  (https://inkscape.org/en/learn/faq/#how-open-eps-files-windows)  You'll never be able to save as AI in Inkscape.  Only Illustrator can do that. 

But you can open some AI files with Inkscape (version 0.91 and after).  And after you have GS working, you can open EPS files too.  Although if you're designing the logos, you probably don't need to download any AI or EPS files anyway.

I don't know much about ImageMagik.  But GIMP should be able to handle BMP and GIF.  I'm not sure about TIFF, but think so.

Export as PNG and use Irfanview to convert to the other formats.

Yes, I have heard that Irfanview is good for converting a wide range of formats.  But I'm not sure if it can handle SVG.  I tried to look on their website, to find a list of supported formats.  At the top of the homepage, it lists many formats, with "..." at the end, implying it can  handle even more formats.  But I can't find a list on the website.

I did specifically search their whole site for SVG, with no results.  I didn't search for EPS.  Oh, but EPS is in the list.  Anyway, I would suggest that starting with a vector file (EPS) would achieve the best results.  GIMP can handle SVG, which is why I suggested it.  Also, it's open source.  (I think irfanview is free, but not sure about open source.  I think it's all one guy.)

Irfanview uses a CadSoft plugin to handle SVG files. This needs to be registered so that the watermark text is eliminated. I haven't registered mine so I don't know whether or not it's free.

I've used it in the past, so I know it's free.  Or at least there's a free version.  There may be a paid version, I can't remember.  Or maybe something changed over the years - it's been over 10 years since I used it.  Maybe not free anymore?   More info:  http://www.irfanview.com/
