Title: Trying to add nodes to rectangle - not working

I am new to Inkscape - and have used CorelDraw for the last 20 years.  My current laptop, (Win 10) won't load up my old (paid for) version of CorelDraw - so I'm working with Inkscape on this laptop.

I'm having a frustration with trying to add a node to a path.  Created a rectangle, which I need to reshape - so I clicked the node tool, and tried double-clicking on any of the lines in the rectangle.. but no success in creating a node.  Also tried the key sequence of Ctrl-ALt Clicking along the line.   What am I doing wrong?  I am following the instructions for Inkscape that state:

The mouse can be used to move nodes and handles by dragging them. It can also be used to alter the shape of a path between two nodes by dragging the path. And finally, nodes can be inserted anywhere along a path by double-clicking the path or by clicking the path while holding down the Ctrl+Alt keys.

In Corel, we have to hit Ctrl-Q to unlock a stock shape before it can be edited with the node editor.  Is there something similar for Inkscape that I have missed?

More in depth searching has found my answer!

For anyone else needing the same info:

After a shape is created, it needs to be converted to paths.  (Shift+Ctrl+C) is the shortcut.  Or click the button for it that appears when the node tool is selected.
