Hi!

I have received an inkscape svg file with text words which, when edited, distribute the letters so that the text object always be constant width.
i.e. I delete the 2's in 42424 and I get 4 4 4 , i.e. the word occupies the same width and the letter position is changed to keep the width of the word constant.

I am both unable to disable this effect and to enable it, (i.e. with text that behaves normally). I've been googling, but still have not found a solution nor even a proper name for this effect.

* It looks like full text justification, but I have checked the justification is to the left.
* it might have something to do with kerning, but I think this works per character, and this effect is per text object.
* The text dialog box just has normal settings, nothing unusual
* It could be an "align and distribute" effect going on, but I tired and it only seems to work on multiple objects, not a single object like this one.
* I'm looking into the flowed text attirbute right now, but still can't seem to simulate this effect.

This file may have been converted from some other format, I'm not sure, so it may be a setting which inkscape doesn't control, although I don't think inkscape devs would let that happen. This must be a feature with an inkscape name for it, I'm sure.

Any ideas or suggestions welcome, cheers!

Just some further work on this

I have tried the word spacing effects, and while they do come close to "my" effect, it is not exactly what happens. i.e. spacing between the letters can be organised easily enough, but if one letter is deleted, the bounding box does in fact reduce to reflect one less letter.

In my effect, the word length is independent of the number of letters. the letters always fully justify to fill out the text bock.

I've done some experimentation with the text flow, and have decided it's unrelated to this, which is a single word effect.

How about just uploading the file? This is not a built-in option of Inkscape which is accessible via UI, as far as I can think - but there might be something in the SVG source code.

Yes, if you can share the file, we could investigate, as well.

I suspect you're right about it being converted from another file format, and may contain things which Inkscape can't create itself.
