The workaround I use is: 1. Export the image as a PNG at high resolution (say 600 dpi). 2. Open in GIMP. 3. Select by colour (Black), invert selection, and delete. Thanks very much, brynn. I actually solved the problem by downloading Inkscape 0.48.1, as I mentioned in my reply to druban. I'm not sure if the fix worked because the new version addressed a known problem in the old, or just because reinstalling the program fixed my settings, or what... but anyway,...

Hello again, druban: I was using 0.47 on a Windows 7 Home Premium PC. It was never jumpy or slow, but only the first little bit of every pencil curve was left off.
