It sounds like you may be in over your head. Can you show us the JPG? Those instructions for converting a pixel image using Trace Bitmap might not work for your image. It's hard to say for sure, without seeing your image. But if you run into other problems, let us know. We can probably help with th...

Depending on your logo, you can just copy-paste the color using the dropper tool: http://en.flossmanuals.net/inkscape/toolbox/dropper-tool/ I'll see if this works.
