brynn - good suggestion. I found that setting the grid to the 'plank width' made it very easy and quick to draw one line, copy and paste, snap to grid, do that a few times then copy a group of lines and repeat. Thanks tylerdurden, have had a quick look (it's late here!) and will study more carefully shortly. Thanks also Moini, have had a look at the Eggbot approach but I need more time to understand it, so will come back to it later. All greatly appreciated.

Thanks, brynn. The key to success was discovering that I needed to 'break apart' the path once I'd used 'break path at selected nodes'. I'm a new user of Inkscape, trying to mark up some cycle routes on OpenStreetMap.
