I find this is the simplest way (although a rough workaround) to stop the gaps from rendering:

yeah, this is a known issue with the inkscape news RSS...

there is talk of switching the inkscape website over to drupal after the 0.46 release. so this will probably be fixed when that occurs...

Just thought i would update this post, Inkscape Feature Requests are now handled by Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/)
Just submit for feature request as a Bug, and it will be classified as a "Wishlist" Item

there will be a news item on the main page of the Inkscape website...

i will probably post a news item to the main news of the openclipart library also...

i have 2 questions and a comment:

when was vista released?
when was inkscape 0.45.1 released?

and

the dev version of inkscape no longer has the menu text colour issue under vista...

As far as i know, this cannot be done in inkscape 0.45.

never fear though, there is some awesome new code in the development version which introduces dockable dialogs. this should solve your problem, maybe you could download an unstable version...
