I used Adobe Illustrator and it worked fine. I guess it was made using that software as you suggested, Lazur. I didn't know that inkscape wouldn't be able to display the gradients/transparency.
I was using an eps, not a PDF. Looks like suv knows why it said PDF instead.

Opening EPS File - Gradient/Transparency Gone?
When I open a particular eps file in inkscape (0.48.2 r9819), the preview window shows the correct image I expect but once it is loaded, the image looks all wrong. I believe it's because there are no gradients or transparency or something like that. I've tried various settings in the Import Settings...
