Thanks, microUgly, for your reply. I later realized that selections que is a small square icon top left hand of object in place of the usual dashed boxes. I certainly was missing this important step. Funny thing is that I have been using Inkscape ( very infrequently ) since March 2007, and I never discovered the Combine Paths operation. Only group and ungroup.
