Why can't I just save to the same size as the document size?

Snapping is not what I was after( but I can see that it will come in handy in the future. ) I'm trying out Inkscape to see how I like it for vector work. No what I was after was connecting (welding all nodes together ) so I went into Anime Studio Pro 11 turned on the auto weld feature and drew the object (vector) and in about a minute it was done one simple object. Here it is:

Hi I just started using Inkscape so forgive my ignorance, I have googled and searched here also but found no answer to what I thought would be easy.
How can I combine two objects or lines or nodes? Not even sure what they are. Sorry for being so ignorant..
