Must be a different bug then!
Upgraded using PPA release and now have EPS of 1.1Mb from same SVG - much more reasonable! Will now endeavor to get more Inkscape experience!

0.46 on Ubuntu 9.04.
So could be the bug.
I solved my problem by making figs in OpenOffice, exporting as PDF and converting using pdftops.
Shame, because I thought Inkscape was pretty easy to use... enjoyable even!
Anyway I'll try upgrading in the meantime.
