Actually for now i'm just using simple straight lines above letters to symbolize vectors. But it would be nice if I could use the arrow. I have to use it again and again so that's why i didn't go for the manual option.

I am using Inkscape 0.48.0 r9654 in Windows 7.
Below is how it is displayed. I want the arrow to be exactly above the letter.

I found this vector symbol with code '20D7'. But problem is that no font other than 'Cambria Math' recognizes this character cod...

It appears that it was indeed a bug, but this one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/512150

I was working with landscape mode. Once I changed the page to 'Portrait' mode, it worked fine.
