You could do a live envelope effect. Heathenx's tutorial here: http://screencasters.heathenx.org/episode-060/ where I learned about it. If you only need a trapezoid do this. HI!
I have a group of paths (say, derived from text). I'd like to transform this group the way a rectangular becames trapezium (say, make top shorter rather bottom). In another words - skew horizontal keeping one of the sides and skewing the other side only.

It's funny, I have the same problem - just working with "A Can of Soup" tutorial (v.0.46 under Linux). I *have* combined top and bottom half-ellipses (bounding rectangle includes both ones) and try to join them selecting appropriate nodes at top and bottom parts, but at join command I see ...
