Had the same problem; just quite both X11 (quartz) and inkscape, then start inkscape -- (letting inkscape start x11 (and tell it where quartz is, typically /Applications/Utilities), and Inkscape is happy and works fine. :D :D providing this quick answer rather than the one above, which after reading...
