It works for me with 0.92.2. Changing the width doesn't do anything if you haven't pasted the pattern yet. Could you maybe not have pasted it yet? Look here (the link goes to exact spot - 3:12). He changes the width of the curve in Pattern along path effect. When I do it, nothing happens.
