Inkscape Can save files as xcf, but for now in Inkscape 0.48.4r. it will not import and open xcf files . Maybe that will be fixed soon though. Just in case you missed the news, mesh gradients are now to be part of SVG 2.0, and there is a branch for that (currently rather unstable due to Cairo bugs). Tav did its presentation on SVG Open 2011 this Monday.

Due to popular demand we published an article on preserving CMYK color values when importing Inkscape's SVG documents into Scribus. Read it here. Inkscape is still better for illustrations, and Scribus is still better for typesetting, so it makes sense ensuring their interoperability.

Yes, Inkscape doesn't show embedded CMYK bitmaps correctly. This is a well-known issue.
