page size only 0.xx I need 0.xxx

Postby PatJr » Fri Jul 29, 2011 5:43 am

I can't figure out how to get more precision when making a page.

I need a page size of 2.125 x 7.750 and all inkscape will let me make is a 2.12 x 7.75
I looked on the internet and here but no luck.
I figured out a work around for now but it's kind of a kludge.

I tried the precision setting at 16 but still no luck.

hits?

Thank You,
Pat Jr.

Thank You for your reply.
I normally work in inches, so it's inches.

Thank You for any tips.

Welcome aboard, PatJr.

I'm firing up Inkscape now...

Seems you're quite right about a page's width being impossible to set manually at 2.125. The system default doesn't allow a third decimal point.

Try forcing the page size:
  1. Create a rectangle that's precisely the size of page you want. 2.125 x 7.750 will do nicely.
  2. Ctrl+Shift+D brings up our document properties.
  3. (Edit: The rectangle doesn't need a stroke, so remove that under the Stroke and Fill dialogue box).
  4. Click the text that says: "Resize page to content..."
  5. Making sure the rectangle remains selected (important here) click the Resize page to drawing or selection button.
  6. Close all dialogue boxes.
I zoomed in on the right side of the rectangle to ensure the page size matches the right-most edge. It does. The Documents Properties dialogue still indicates the page width as 1.12, but I believe that is a rounding-off effect due to that box's inability to include more than 2 decimal places.

A second suggestion would be to

create a rectangle on a primary layer. Give it the 2.125 x 7.750 size.
Ensure it has no stroke.
Set its colour to white while you're editing your document.
Create new layers above it to do your editing.
When done lock all layers above it.
Hide all upper layers.
Select the rectangle on the bottom layer.
Make it transparent.
Keeping the rectangle selected unhide all upper layers.
Export the rectangle as a PNG image

This is assuming you'd be working with images. Your post is a bit thin on details. Therefore, offering you assistance means more effort on our part.

Hey Bob, Thanks for the tip.

Sorry about not having details. At the point of setting the page size, I didn't have many.

PNG idea could be handy down the way, Thank You.

I read another message, sometime within the last few months, where someone came up with a solution. I think it was ~suv who had a solution. But I can't remember where that member needed extra decimal places....which would be the ideal search term....I'll try to find it, and provide a link. Image

EDIT
Wow, good thing I crossed my finger, because I found it right away :P . Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it will work for page size. But Bob may be able to extrapolate a solution? viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9482&p=35059&hilit=decimal#p35059

Thanks for the tip brynn
Looks like inkscape uses pixels for it's internal measurements?

the first tag has some variables Height and Width that seem to be the page size.
I set the page size to 100 inches x 100 inches and took a peek, the values came up as 9000 and 9000 so with some quicky ratios I set the page size to 191.25 x 697.50 and it looks like it worked.
tested with a box set to the 2.125 x 7.750 and the page seemed to be the right size
It looks like inkscape has a lot more precision "under the hood" then the UI let's you use? Might be some raeson for that, I wouldn't know.

I've been using inkscape and scribus a good bit lately. Now a days, it's not easy, but Yes You Can to those GA guys.

Oh absolutely!
I know next to nothing about XML, but when people ask questions about how to do something using XML, that is easily done on the canvas, it makes me wonder if it isn't possible to draw an image using code alone. To be honest, I don't know why anyone would want to do that, but I have no doubt that I have much, much more to learn about Inkscape!

I believe there's more "under the hood" than what you can key in to text boxes.

Why?

Dunno. My guess would be that serious Inkscape users are going to look under the hood. They're going to find what they need by digging at the software. True, this might turn off your lightweight user. But here you are! And you've found out the truth!

The XML editor is fairly powerful. In fact, as I'm editing the page size in the XML editor, the software allows for not just 2, 3 or 4, but FIVE decimal places. That's precise enough for anyone, I think. Unless you're drawing plans for the next moon launch, at which point you'd be using NASA's software. :D
