Issue with Background Behind PNG

Postby molly234000 » Sun Mar 25, 2012 10:39 am

I am trying to create a very basic logo using text. The logo has two different words using two different fonts. I have select both words simultaneously & then choose "export to bitmap" and save the selection as a PNG. When I open the PNG file directly in a browser, it shows the background as transparent (with the little grey & white checkerboard pattern behind the text). However, when I upload the image to my website header it shows a large black box (see http://milestonenorthwest.com/). Any idea what I am doing incorrectly? Is the issue with how I'm creating the PNG in Inkscape or something to do with the HTML on my site? Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated :)

The proper way to get a PNG is to use File menu > Export Bitmap. I'm not sure if you should be seeing the checkerboard pattern in the browser, perhaps not, and perhaps it might have been caused by using Save As Cairo png (if that's what you used). I'm not clear exactly how you saved the image, but here's the proper way. After you've finished the drawing, select the logo, and then do File menu > Export Bitimap using the Selection option. This will save a PNG version in the the place that you choose. After that, you might want to Save As SVG, if you haven't already (just in case you need to change the logo in the future). But you don't need to save as PNG afterwards (because that's what happened when you exported).

Sometimes I've seen a transparent background shown as black, especially where I have a lot of my images hosted at ImageShack. I'm not sure what causes that. But even so, using such an image, like in your webpage header, you should see the image as you expect, with transparent background.

I know only a little very basic html. I did look at your page code, but it uses elements that I'm not familiar with. So I can't say if the coding is appropriate. But I think the first step will be to make sure you have a good PNG with transparent background. Once you have that, you can look elsewhere for the proper code.

Let us know how it goes using the steps I've mentioned :D

I don't know what "nas" is. I do know the the forum went down for about 3 hours yesterday, due to host server issues. I don't know if slow boot.....well, what do you mean by slow boot. Do you mean slow page loading? I guess I think of booting as more related to the computer system, than the internet. Slow page loading could be related to the host server. I was getting a lot of time outs yesterday.

nas -- network access server? I don't think so.

The version on your website is a JPEG, not a PNG. JPEG doesn't support transparency.
