More Devils More Labels left margin

Postby Fabienne » Thu Apr 08, 2010 2:07 am

I still can't seem to get Inkscape to make Avery 5160 labels with any consistency and I would appreciate any light you can shed on this problem.

After a great deal of experimentation, I have found out that owing to either my printer (Canon MP830) or some quirk in Inkscape, I have to position my label at 3/8" from the edge of the sheet in order to have the labels line up on the left hand side. This is noteworthy because they will print out 1/4" from the left side when I do this (which is what I want). In other words, I have to compensate by 1/8" in order to have the far left hand column of labels line up correctly and print. If I overcompensate, they consistently print out fine. If I were to put them exactly at 1/4", they would print way way to far to the left and be cut off. It is as if they push everything over to the left by 1/8".

If I look at the label layout in Inkscape, it is perfect at 1/4". When I preview it with my printer, it is too far to the left by 1/8". It will print out too far to the left, so the preview is right, that is what it will print.

Is there some built in buffer zone in Inkscape?

I want to only talk about one aspect of the labels at a time. I am also having problems with the other aspects of printing (I am tiling clones). Thanks.

Are you sure you have the correct page size set in Inkscape, and also correct paper size chosen in Printing settings?

Please don't think I am ignoring you. I have an overriding consideration to take care of (have to reinstall XP on a corrupted computer). Who knows, maybe there is corruption afoot as part of my problem. I will do a set of labels as soon as I am able and make very very very sure that all the labels and sheets have inches chosen as their units of measure, that the sheet is letter size (US) and the labels are exactly what they should be all the way along and report back. Thanks for your interest. I sometimes have a difficult time keeping the default at US Letter rather than A4.

P.S. I just went into the Inkscape program and made up a US Letter blank document and saved it so that it would be my default document (documents and settings-->myname-->Application Data--->Inkscape), saved it as default.svg. I got out of there and attempted to start a new document, it was still the A4. Got out of Inkscape, restarted it, still an A4 as a default. Tried to change it again to letter, no luck. So, I am suspicious that there is a lot more to my label troubles than merely inattention to the size of everything. I hope that is why Inkscape has been so erratic. More later.

I'm not sure but I think on Windows the location of the templates is inside Inkscape directory C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\

Can you override the default.svg there and see if it makes a difference?

Inkscape 0.47 does load custom user templates on Windows too, but default.svg has to be inside the user templates folder i.e. saved as %APPDATA%\Inkscape\templates\default.svg (on linux/osx the equivalent is ~/.config/inkscape/templates/default.svg)

Are you using the bitmap printend instead of vector by chance? (if so, maybe it is related to bug #508529 “Printing rastered image offsets the page”).
