[Newbie] How to select multiple objects in a specific area?

Postby stana » Sat May 22, 2010 12:17 am

I have a largish Adobe Illustrator drawing open/imported in Inkscape,

I completely fail at doing something very basic:
I would like to select all objects in the middle of the drawing (my desired objects are multilayered smallish button design, which consists of about 10-12 objects. The whole drawing has probably 1000 objects at multiple layers. There are big objects serving as background, which I do not desire to select).

How can I select these small objects nicely?

What I have done:
Selected whole drawing, did Shift-Ctrl-G to ungroup all objects.

Now, I would click on Select and Transform objects button :tool_selector: then Hold Shift Key while I try to select desired objects, but I am unable to draw selection around those objects. If I start my selection process close to my desired objects, nothing happens. If i start to draw my selection box outside any objects(that is outside drawing) i can select my objects, but in the process select many unneeded objects on the way.

What I can do, but which is very painful, is use Edit Paths by Nodes button :tool_node: and select individual objects with mouse while holding shift key. This way I can grab about 3-4 objects at a time then Cut and Paste them to blank drawing and then repeat the action, painful it is because, assembling again with same alignment is close to impossible..

What easy method am I missing? :)
If there is way to use something like Free Select Tool (as in Gimp and other programs) it would be great, but even a square area selector would be perfectly fine.

Have you tried holding Shift while dragging around the objects with the selector tool (rubberband selection that disables moving the objects at the point where you first click)?

Holding Alt and dragging across objects will select all that are touched.

Can you hide the layers with objects you don't need?

Thanks for the tips!

I ended up removing(not sure how to hide them so they do not get selected) unneeded layers, still there were some layers which wouldn't ungroup, but overall I made progress. :)
