Snap to guides not working when I group a section of nodes?

Postby YeeP » Fri Oct 04, 2013 12:13 am

Hello! I have built a document that is very heavy in guides. This document is going to be used as a background image for a 1099 tax form. The top half is complete, and I have the guides built for the bottom half which is an exact copy of the top. So, I have built a separate layer, then copy and pasted the top half to it. Then I paste, and while all lines are selected, I group all of them. While still selected, I move the image downward to try and align the upper left corner of the lines to the guides I have built which will align it correctly. However, once they are grouped, the dotted line goes much higher and I am unable to align the node correctly. If I select the node tool, and try to align it this way I can only align the box in the upper left corner....

So, can anyone tell me a good method for pasting an image with a large amount of lines, then aligning a node that exists in the image? Of course, the assumption here with the alignment is that the entire pasted image will move with the node you are aligning. This way all of it will be in the proper position.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Ryan

Hi.

So you have a group of objects, and you want to align a duplicant of it next below it.

You can use the align and distribute panel in most cases.
That option is working with the object's visuaal bounding box, shown by default with that dotted line around the selected objects.
If it's not where you think it should be, you may grouped something you didn't wantde to
-invisible object, blurred objects; maybe you have a path with a stroke's end next to the bounding box?- .
What you can do is to use some spacer objects, or
calculate the y position of the second object and type in manually the right value, or
to enable snapping to nodes -cusp and smooth ones-, and simply move the group to the right position, until it snaps into place.
I would suggest to try the third method first as the others may be a bit complicated of the reasons you ran into the problem.

Lazur, you are correct on what I am trying to do. I am not sure on the grouping with something I do not want it to be grouped with. I am usually very careful to keep EVERYTHING on different layers, but that may be a possible. I like your idea of calculate the y position. I already have guides build at every intersection needed on the file. If I attach it, would you mind giving it a try? I do not need you to do the work for me, I am just curious if you can do what I am trying to and let me know how you did it. I have a PNG embeded which is last year's W2 form, and I built the guides off of that. I am about to play around and see if I can do it now. Just an FYI, I have been snaping nodes to guide intersections. I do this because I built the guides on the center of every line needed.

Here is the W2 4 position copy. If you are not interested in messing with it, no problem and I appreciate your input.

NOTE: the file was too big to upload, I put it on my dropbox account:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1imwax7ldpbin ... mplate.svg

Hopefully, because the PNG is embeded on its' own layer, you will be able to turn it on and off. The form that I made is in the upper left.

Thanks.

Lazur, here is what I did to copy and paste the object at this point (I think there should be a better way and I just do not know what it is).

I copy and pasted it to a new layer. Then I grouped it, which did nothing for me, so I combined the paths in hopes that I could grab the upper left node and mode the entire object to align it properly. That did not work. So, with the entire object selected, I typed in the x and y coordinates and got it aligned.

I feel like I should be able to use the guides, to align an entire object as opposed to aligning it node by node. Is there a way to do this?

Thank you for your time.

A bit cleaned version:
SVG Image
-click on it to download-

The page was resized to us letter size, and added a grid of pt dimensions.
The vertical distances seems right, but I'm not sure about the horizontal ones.

Didn't use guide lines at all, there was no need of them.
With the grid each node could be snapped to position.
