vertically curved text

Postby vitoria » Sun Jan 22, 2012 4:16 pm

Hi all; I've just gotten started using inkscape, so of course I manage to get myself into something I can't Google my way out of the first try :)

I'm designing a logo that needs to have text curved ("Howling Wolf"), vertically, along a crescent. I can get the text attached to the path, but regardless of what I do, the text doesn't go the right direction (thus far the best I've gotten out of it is from reversing the path, which puts the text right-side-up on the bottom of the curve... not what I'm looking for.)

The only way I can see around it is creating the text letter-by-letter, and attaching each letter to the path, but when I tried it didn't line up evenly. Is there either a way to make my text curve vertically, or to do it letter-by-letter but ensuring they all line up right?

What I've got:

What I want:

(Sorry if this is something glaringly obvious I'm missing-- I've literally just starting using this tonight, so I'm still pretty much in the "haphazardly poking at buttons and running to the internet every thirty seconds" stage.)

Thanks!

Hi!
At the top of your second image, text tool`s menu is shown, but further more to the right you`ll find "character rotation". So, put the text on the path (as shown on your first image); while text tool is active - select the whole word (drag from the first to the last letter, like in some text editor) and then enter desired degree of rotation. That way all of the letters would be affected. If word is not selected (but activated with text tool), position of the cursor would determine which letter would be affected. Other options from that same menu could help in further corrections and adjustments.

There is also the option to make the text vertical, it's at the end of the toolbar on the right, then put it on the path ;)

Thank you so much! I followed your directions, and combined with a bit more tweaking, got basically what I was looking for. Hurray!

It's still not quite as tidy as I would like, but it's good enough for current purposes :)

@ prkos
I`ve tried that one, but I didn`t get the desired result. Could it be that I`m missing something?

Probably related to Bug #168862 in Inkscape: “Text on path with vertical aligned text

Alternatively, consider trying to achieve such an effect with a combination of the extensions 'Extensions > Text > Split Text…' (into letters) and 'Place objects on path', similar to this example.

Yeah, I started to answer this topic late last night, but I ran into difficulties putting the vertical text on a path. Then it was so late that I just couldn't think clearly enough to sort out the problem. I thought it would be a combination of rotating the letters and vertical text, but I had no idea there might be a bug.
