Auto save when InkScape Crash?

Postby hjalle » Mon Jun 15, 2009 11:45 pm

I just lost a InkScape file when Inkscape crashed. InkScape gave my a massage that he saved a file "New document 2009_06_15_03.11". And I cant find it anywhere. Is it folder "New document" and file "2009_06_15_03.11".
And the stupid thing to work for a hour and working on a "new drawing", and not save the file under the process is my fault.

Thought
Must I be root to get crash saved/backup file, because If IncScape try to write that file in the filsystem, and not the home folder?
Can't IncScape save the file because the folder "New document" doesn't exist, not created?
I have Swedish language on my system. so the file name is "Nytt dokument 2009_06_15_03.11". Can it be a conflict between the system language and IncScape code that try to save the file in English?
Like I said I have Swedish language on my system and my "Desktop" folders system name is "Skrivbord" "( "home" folder have the English name in the Swedish system also) , Can it be a conflict between the system language and IncScape code that try to save the file in the folder "Desktop", but can't find it?

In other words, does "crash saved/backup file" work for you who have English system?

IncScape 0,46/Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit.

Thanks.
I found it. InkScape saved the file in English "New document", not in Swedish "Nytt dokument" like it said in the message.

Hey there!

Thank you first for your hint how to find the crashfile. However, my Inkscape-Installation (0.46 on Windows XP) crashed a few times now. With your help, I was able to find the crashfiles, but I don't know what to do with them. Even worse, I seem to be unable to do anything with them. I cannot copy, delete or rename them. Instead I only get "Access denied!" notifications.
Does anybody have an idea what's going on - or even better, a solution?

Regards

I can't help too much. I get crash files in C:\Documents and Settings\<my username>\ . Some don't get a .svg extension, but I can rename the files to add one, and then they open up in Inkscape. (Turn off "Hide File extensions for known filetypes. Not that that's any real answer).

Hello!

Thanks for your quick answer. Yours actually have .svg-extensions? None of mine has! And turning off hidden file extensions is always one of the first things I do.

Thanks again

Most do; some don't. They'll be from various Inkscape versions as well. If I add a .svg extension, they'll all open up in Inkscape. There isn't necessarily anything to see, though.

I've never found the crash save reliable. 0.47's autosave feature is a great improvement.

I'll find a way to delete the files. And I was still using 0.46 so thanks a lot for the hint.

I was able to find a crash autosave just by going to the start menu in Windows7 and typing .svg into the search bar at the bottom (where it says search files and programs). That pulled up all .svg files but automatically sorted them with most recent first, and the top file was the one I had last worked on (my crashed file).

Cheers,

I have used this program, a couple dozen times. Today, it crashed, in the middle of a project I had been working on, for 2 days. I assumed it was auto-saving, so I didn't think anything of it. Unfortunately, it wasn't backing anything up and I lost the project. Last time I will ever use this program.

It's suggested that you activate the auto-save (the emergency save on crash may fail) functionality in the Preferences and regularly save yourself. Inkscape comes with no warranty whatsoever, just like (most? all?) other software.
