Food Forest Design

Postby Jonathan Francoeur » Thu Jul 16, 2015 1:30 pm

I've finished this design and I have a problem with the file size. Why is it so big? I've made a copy of the file, deleted all of the layers and the image is still over 70 megabytes.
Check it out!

Hello
You are using a lot of times a "sand" texture, in a high resolution.
What can you do?
- Remove all of them
- Find a way to re-use (link) it for all the objects. To be honest, I don't know if the SVG format allow this. Or if it is possible to on Inkscape. I'm thinking in something similar to cloning the texture for different objects. I don't know if I'm being understood.
Let's consult:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... s-Patterns

mmm...It doesn't say nothing of what I'm thinking

Well, here it says that a pattern can be defined and the used
http://www.vanseodesign.com/web-design/ ... n-element/

...emmmm ... any of these make sense?

- Are you using Inkscape 0.48? . Give it a try to Inkscape 0.91

Sorry ... I can't help you more for the moment

Greetings
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.
2.- Please check here:

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

Well, it's taking me some time to examine the file, because of its size. Actually I was shocked when I was able to open it at all!

So far, I haven't found the sand textures that hulf mentioned. There are a lot of layers, and I'm going through 1 by 1. But I found 4 embedded raster images, some are clipped, which appear to be somewhat large (in dimension). Rather then embedding them and then clipping, you could try cropping them in a raster editor, and then when you import and embed in Inkscape, they will be much smaller. Or you could link rather than embed, and save a whole lot in the overall file size. Although you would not be able to take the SVG file to another computer, because the linked images would become unlinked.

At the moment, I'm waiting for the XML Editor to open. So far, waiting 5 minutes. I waited 8 minutes for file to download. Possibly Inkscape will crash, and I'll give up. I only have 4 gb RAM. But I thought looking through XML Editor might be faster than looking at layers 1 by 1. I guess not, lol.

Thank you for your replies. To further investigate the issue I made a copy and deleted every image from all of the layers. Then I deleted all of the layers. The file size of the original was 74.5 MB. The new file with no layers or images is 74.1mb. Here is the blank file with no layers. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0347I8F74ogeVZOeXZXVXRFNjA/view?usp=sharing
Thanks again.

After deleting unused defs (208925, more than before) the file shrinks to 2 kB.
(Stored settings of patterns, clipping objects, 3D boxes, spiro-path effects, markers, and so on -from line 45 to line 1135103.)

Thank you. File>'Vaccume Defs' did the trick! Thanks again.
