Help with 3D Box Vanishing Points [solved]

Postby kec601 » Wed Dec 03, 2014 2:35 am

Hi all,

I am very new to Inkscape, having just converted from Illustrator, and I'm having a bit of a tough time figuring out this 3D box tool. I've managed to make something that passes for a box, but I can't seem to find the ends of my vanishing points. The lines for my vanishing points stretch seemingly endlessly off my screen (picture included).

I want to change the perspective of my box, so that the nearest edge of the box faces you dead on, and the sides on the left and right are equal (picture included).

However, I can't seem to manipulate my X Y and Z angles well enough to get there.

The box I want to make would look like this :

The box I have now looks like this :

So my questions are as follows :
[1] Is there any way I can find where my vanishing points end, so I can move the vanishing points by hand?
[2] How can I rotate the box so that the left hand edge of the front of the box is facing the viewer head on?
> Would I need to change my X, Y, or Z angles? Or is there some other way of rotating the box?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
- K

Hi.

Note that you toggled in parallel lines at the toolbar icons that results in no vanishing points.
Untoggle them and it will be in perspective.

The tool doesn't really rotates the box, it works only in 2D.
There is the render 3D polyhedron extension that can do similar -though that produces only ortographic projected images.

This is my first time posting here, is there any way to make my question as done, without deleting the post? (In case other people want to read it)

Cheers!

You can edit the title of the topic to contain "[solved]" if you like.
Not sure if there is a moderator option to mark topics solved; there would be a horrid amount of topics to change then.

The 3d box can "sort of" rotate. If you hold Shift, while grabbing the box by the X handle, and drag, it moves the box, keeping its original perspective. It's a little bit like you were walking around the box and keeping your eye on it while you move.

I learned this while drawing a bookcase, and using the 3D Box tool to make the shelves and all the books. If you draw a book on one end of the shelf, and decide to move it over on the shelf, it doesn't look right in the new place because it's perspective it set for the first place I drew it. Or same thing for drawing the book first on the top shelf. You can't just move to a lower shelf, because the perspective changes. You have to drag with shift, to change the perspective. (It's one of many Inkscape tools/features which just seem to be kind of magic sometimes!)

Anyway, maybe this will help
