Dire charm spell icon

Postby Onox » Tue Apr 12, 2016 6:45 am

Hi,

I am trying to recreate the Dire Charm spell icon from Baldur's Gate. Since I am an absolute beginner with Inkscape, I had to experiment.

First I created the outline of the eye with the Bézier curve tool, and then the eyelashes separately. For the eyelashes I selected Path > Stroke to Path and merged them with the eye by selecting all the paths and Path > Union. For the spiral in the center of the eye, I again chose Stroke to Path and then Path > Difference. To fill the eye, I used an elliptic gradient (I wondered if I should instead use another layer on top of the first one for the shading, but I haven't tried that and I don't know how to do it for the moment.)

But I am not exactly sure how I should align the spiral, as it is not symmetric. This is very disturbing. Which one do you prefer (the gradient is not exactly the same, but my question is really about the alignment :) ) :

Thank you

I'm not familiar with this icon. But maybe you could use the original, to decide exactly where to put the spiral?

Good job !

Another good way of getting the eye shape is by overlapping two circles (or ellipses) with a lowered opacity, and perform an 'Intersection'.

I dont know about positioning the spiral, aligning by eye can be superior to "perfect" methods.
Sometimes its the human factor that makes thing look right.

Have you tried snapping to the rotational center ?

I'll try to learn new things when I have the time
