Hi, I've searched the forum but haven't found an answer to my needs: I want to do two things:
1. Create Inkscape documents involving all Japanese kanji
2. Import Illustrator CS2 documents containing Japanese kanji, into Inkscape.
Much obliged for any help forthcoming. I'm running OS X Lion on a new iMac. I'm completely new to Inkscape but love it so far.

Using Japanese kanji in Inkscape
Re: Using Japanese kanji in Inkscape

Welcome David!
I haven't answered your question earlier, because I'm not entirely sure what you're asking. And based on what you have posted, I probably don't have much to contribute anyway. But I'm hoping my reply (which will bump your topic back to the top) will help you get better replies. I'm sure others will be better able to help. But you might need to provide a little more info about what you're asking.
Regarding your question #1, will you be using a Japanese kanji font? I don't see any problem using the Text tool and/or Text Editor, as long as you have the font installed, and it's stable enough that Inkscape recognizes and can use it. (Inkscape can be a little picky about font stability.) If you're not using such a font, what do you mean by "Create Inkscape documents involving all Japanese kanji"?
To question #2, I guess you would just use File menu > Import. I don't think there would be any problem importing. But opening and editing AI docs likely will be problematic. You can search the forum for many other topics about using AI with Inkscape (opening, saving as, exporting, etc.)
There are some issues with using Inkscape on a Mac, but I don't know off the top of my head, if they affect the font, Text tool, or importing AI. There are a multitude of topics on this subject as well.
Hopefully someone else can comment

Re: Using Japanese kanji in Inkscape
Hi!
I'm relatively new to Inkscape and am trying to do the exact same thing as David was trying some time ago.
So what I would like to do is importing an Adobe Illustrator file, which contains Japanese characters and English text.
However, when I import the file in Inkscape, it only imports the English texts, no characters are imported.
I run Inkscape 0.48 on Windows 7, no Japanese fonts installed as such.
can someone help me out here?
