Newbie making a mess of CDR import

Postby Steve Francis » Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:28 am

I have just made the transition from Windows XP to Ubuntu 9.04

I am trying to covert my CorelDraw 7 files so that they are usable in an Ubuntu drawing package.

First I tried installing and using sK1 0.9.1 which could import but doesn't seem very feature-rich.

I have just installed Inkscape to try. When I tried to import any CDR files into Inkscape , however, there just seemed to be a selected object that was an empty box.

I installed python2.5.

I downloaded uniconvertor 1.0.0 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/uniconv ... b/download from Source Forge and got an error when trying to install it...
trying to overwrite /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/uniconvertor/app/modules/pstokenize.so

I uninstalled sk1 and found that I could now successfully install uniconvertor 1.0.0

But now CDR does not show up as an import option in Inkscape!

Should I reinstall sK1? Any advice on where I'm going wrong?

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, the command hasn't been successful for me.

When I type
sudo apt-get install python-uniconvertor

I get the following response:

Is this an Ubuntu problem?

sudo apt-get remove uniconvertor
sudo apt-get install python-uniconvertor

Thanks - This worked with regards to installation.

When I now use Inkscape to import a CDR file, however, I only get parts of the drawing with some pieces missing particularly text.

It works better if I export the CorelDraw 7 file to a PDF first, and then import the PDF to Inkscape. The fonts are not converted, however.

Is CorelDraw 7 ----> PDF ----> Inkscape an optimum solution?
