Multiple clipping

Postby madjoe » Fri Nov 23, 2012 10:10 pm

I use Inkscape 0.48 (Ubuntu 12.04), and I justr tried to re-use my clipped object with another object and it didn't work.

Description:
1. Let's start with creating 3 object: A, B and C. :tool_ellipse: :tool_ellipse: :tool_rectangle:
2. I used object A and B for my first "clip > set", and I've got a modified object A, let's call it A1
3. I wanted to use the object A1 with C to create another modification of A1, but I've got something else

Here's the screenshot of my actions (from top to the bottom) - at the last step I expected my result to keep the same shape as in previous step, but I've got something else. :o

What am I missing? :(

Thanks!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

So Object A is clipped by clipping path B = A1. Then A1 and Object C are somehow used together. What was the modification? Another clip? Or something else?

Did you try to use A1 for a clipping path? I think in your screenshot, A1 is the red kind of pointy egg shape, right? Since it's on top of the yellow square, I'm guessing you wanted to use it to clip the yellow square. ....Oh yes, that must be it, because your final result is exactly what would happen if you used A1 to clip the yellow square.

If that's the case, try this instead. Select A and B and do Path menu > Intersection. Then you'll have a path that looks like the red pointy egg, which will be suitable to use as a clipping path on the yellow square.

Let us know how it goes :D

@brynn: Wow! That's it! Thanks! So - intersection it is.

Just for the record - if I already created a complicated object A1 by "clip > set" is there ANY possible way I could re-use it for the last step of my example?
I'd like to avoid doing it all over, since I created much more complicated object than this. Thanks a million! :)

Fortunately, in this case, you can re-use it. Select A1, then Object menu > Clip > Release. That will return Object A to its original state, and Object B will reappear. Then you can proceed with the Intersection, and the rest :D

Just to note/hint. It's always a good idea to duplicate the objects you are using when clipping, or whatever, before executing the action. I usually open a new layer and dup all items. For some reason, there are times when the objects all disappear or just go wonky, and I've found it a lot less frustrating to have a 2nd orig available, esp when you want to perform the same action many times over - always keep a dup. Also, sometimes after doing the steps the clip msk simply can't be used again, not sure why, it happens to me sometimes when using text/put on path too. Of course it's probably just me that's messing it up, lol.

@brynn and @flamingolady: Great stuff! Your suggestions are valuable and most appreciated! It works now and I start feeling more comfortable to use Inkscape! ;)
Many thanks!

@flamingolady: I hear you and I also understand the app is still v0.48, so I do expect some major glitches and issues before v1.0. lol :)
So far, so good! It's a great app!
