How do I get rid of the rest of layer?
How do I get rid of the rest of layer?
As title says. On the picture I attached there is a writing "VIce" and a black palm stencil in the background which I used to have part of it to be seen through the transparent writing, both objects are separate layers. I only need the pieces of the palm that are already "inside" the writing, how do I get rid of the rest of the palm that's outside of "VIce"? I'm starting my adventure with vector graphics and would be extremely grateful for any tips and hints! Thank you

Re: How do I get rid of the rest of layer?
I'd combine the pink objects, make a clone of the pink combined object, and use it to clip the palm object.

When a path is used to clip, it is no longer visible, so the clone is used for the clipping, to leave the original in the foreground.
How to clip:

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: How do I get rid of the rest of layer?
Thanks so much for a reply! Unfortunately I'm an amateur and I'm new to vector graphics (although I'm aware that something as "paths", "cloning" are in photoshop), could you explain to me what exactly are the paths and how do I clip the object? Thanks a lot!

In the Inkscape Help menu are good tutorials.
Searching this forum for "tutorials" will also present good learning resources.

Re: How do I get rid of the rest of layer?
That image that td provided is an SVG image, which means you can save it and open with Inkscape, to see how he did it. But I don't mind giving you a step by step answer, if you think it would be easier. But I have a few questions whose answers will determine how many steps are needed.
First I'm curious why you have used 2 layers. Do you have some need for them to remain on their separate layers? Or can they be in the same layer? Is it possible you are thinking in terms of raster graphics, where generally there can only be 1 image in a layer? In any case, there will be some extra steps if you need the black palm tree (parts) to stay in a separate layer.
Are the pink letters with black outline paths? Or are they still text? Select them with the Selection tool
and then look at the status bar (bottom of window, in the middle) to see what it says. If they are paths, the first word will be "Paths". If it's text, the first word will be "Text". Possibly it could say "Group of....", and if so, tell me what it's a group of.
Are the pink part and the black outline part separate objects? Or is it 1 object with pink fill and black stroke?
[Slightly off topic, it seems that clipping across layers no longer works in 0.91. Anyone else notice that? Put clipping path in layer above and try to clip. Results for me, both objects disappear! I'm quite sure I've done that successfully in previous versions.]b
