Okay, I have already run into a snag with this program. I have designed a logo and a letterhead for a grant writing firm. The logo was easy, the typesetting for the letterhead was mostly easy. I have set the company name, and the address and web address and all that looks fine. I have a mission statement they want me to include. When I first set the mission statement it looked fine to me, but the client wanted a different type style. I changed the type style and everything looked fine on the screen, but when I printed it, the letters are all crammed together...to the point of literally being over each other and the space inbetween the words is also crammed in. I have tried changing the type style back. I have tried typing smaller then resizing larger to spread the letters apart. I have tried deleting whole text box and then retyping. I have tried deleting the text box, saving, and replacing the text box. Still the type looks fine on the screen and is all crunched together when printed. I am have now deleted the text box, saved and now closed the program. I am going to reopen the program and retype that text box. The weird thing is that everything else looks fine. I have even rest some of the type in one of the other text boxes and it prints fine.
Hope anyone can help. If you need more info, be glad to let you know.
Thanks for any help.
Jim
Type setting problems
Re: Type setting problems
respectfully, but inkscape + text editing is not the simplest to learn and do.. IMHO this is the one area inkscape needs significant improvement to.. ok enough of that, the people that work on inkscape are awesome, onto your issue.
1. Create your text by choosing the text tool "Letter A" icon in the toolbox. Single click the canvas and type away. Once you have your text setup the way you want.. I would do the following:
(optional) Open the LAYERS menu >Layers >Layer (Shift+Ctrl+L) and make a separate TEXT LAYER.. Select your text then use SHIFT+PgUP (>Layer>Move selection to layer above). This helps in some of the cumbersome operations needed to work with text.
Now that you have a TEXT ONLY layer, you can duplicate it >Layer >Duplicate current layer. Hide the duplicated layer. I just do this to avoid making the text edits in inkscape less frustrating.
Go back to your visible text layer and select your text and convert it to a PATH using >Path >Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C).. done. The text/font are now regullar vectors and should print correctly - hope this helps...
note: Editing Text is one of the Largest topics in the free inkscape manual, so you may want to do some reading up on working with text....

Re: Type setting problems
Also note that Object to Path should be the very last thing you do before printing, because you will no longer be able to edit the text as text. Now it is all a path and won't respond to the Text and Font dialog. I guess that's why vwanweb suggested making a hidden text layer. For in case you need to edit again, after printing.

Re: Type setting problems
Ohhhhhh!!!!! Thanks very much. I didn't even think to look at doing something like that, this should make it a lot easier to set this up as a template in word. And should address the rest of the issues. I will try this. Oh thanks for the wait till the last minute on this. I tend to save multiple copies of everything as I go along, especially when working with a new program (or more accurately an unfamiliar program,) but sometimes we get ahead of ourselves.
Thanks I will try this and let you know how it turns out.
