how to cut/design a two colored object

Postby graciescloset » Fri Mar 12, 2010 9:17 am

Hi, I'm trying to cut two layered decals. I have the logos and right now, I'm cutting one of each color and weeding away the part that I dont need for each item then layering so nothing overlaps...I was told there's an easier way...Please help!

I'm afraid we will need more info, before suggesting the best ways to do what you want. Like for example, what do you want to do? I might guess that you want to print more decals, but that's not entirely clear in your message. If it is printing that's your goal, let us know if the printer has given you any specifications, and what they are.

What do you mean by
I'm trying to cut two layered decals.

Do you have 2 decals which both contain layers? Or do you have decals that contain 2 layers? Are you trying to separate the layers? Are you trying to cut 2 decals out of 1? Are you trying to cut 2 layered decals into several pieces? Etc.

It's almost always a good idea to include as much detail in your message as possible, when asking for help in a forum ;)

First, what I think you're wanting to do is to take a logo with two colours, and from that produce two separate non-overlapping images, each of which can then be used to make a decal. The decal then can make a two-colour print. If that's not right, say what you want.

The laborious stage is the weeding away. Starting with two overlapping colours:
Select all the items of each colour in turn, then do a path->combine on each (If any are groups, you'll have to ungroup them first). This leaves you with two paths.
Select the "top" path. Duplicate it. Shift-Select the "bottom" path (you'll now have a copy of the top, and the original bottom selected). Do a path->difference. This is the auto-weeding operation - you now have two non-overlapping paths.
