Drop shadow - Differences between INKSCAPE and GIMP

Postby alecive » Sat Oct 12, 2013 8:48 pm

Hello everyone,

[short introduction]
I'm a long-term icon designer (for anyone interested, I'm the developer of AwOken icon theme -> http://alecive.deviantart.com/art/AwOken-163570862 ). I started that project completely from scratch and without any previous knowledge, and being a self-taught person I started using GIMP, which I found more easy to use and understand than inkscape. Eventually, I ended up with an icon pack with more than 10000 icons, made exclusively with GIMP.
Recently, I started playing around with inkscape, and I found it to be not that difficult to understand and more powerful (for this task) as well. So, I decided to move on and draw icons exclusively on Inkscape.
[/short introduction]

The Problem
My problem comes with the drop shadow filter. I used the exact same svg image for both gimp and inkscape, and I applied the same drop-shadow filter with the same parameters. But the result is quite different! Here's a screenshot:

I understand that probably they use different internal parameters, but is there a way to modify those internal parameters in order to find a match between the two?

My problem is that I would like to seamlessy integrate the new svg icons with the old png ones, so I cannot use any alternative method I've found online (like duplicating the path and blurring it or creating a series of duplicated paths with differnt opacity). The resulting effect is not quite the same and the control over the parameters is not that easy as well. I'm stuck with drop shadow, but I cannot make it work! :(

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Welcome aboard!

I'm not much of an inkscape filter user but my experience is that it can cover exactly gimp's filter in cases.
So my thought just to make it sure:
on that comparision image the gimp dropshadow is set to black,
while the inkscape one has that linear gradient instead of black.

Another thing that may not match too is the size of the two paths?
Because with the same blur amount the inkscape's shadow is more blurred.

It's exactly as you said. My problem is exactly that! Basically, I cannot understand why, by using the same exact parameters, I have different results.
As you can see in the screenshot, both the color, the opacity, and the size are set to the same value, but the results are different.
