Inkscape re-associates it's self with mimetypes

Postby Landis » Sat May 18, 2013 3:19 pm

Inkscape continues to re associate, for instance, *.pdf with inkscape.
Firefox offers only inkscape as 'default' viewer for pdf, over and over.
I repeatedly have to edit the 'mimeinfo.cache and defaults.list files in /usr/share/applications/ and have even copied them to ~/.local/share/applications/ but inkscape continues to re-associate it's self. It even associates it's self with 'Corel-Draw (CDR) files, even though it can Not load them...
It seems that inkscape re-assigns it's self each time It is launched and there are No settings in inkscape about 'file association' that I can find.

Any ideas Why this continues to happen?
bluefish editor seems to like to do this too. My solution for that is to Remove bluefish. I use Kate anyways, but don't want to have to remove inkscape.. I like it.

Landis.
openSuSE 12.3, KDE 4.10.2, All updates. (one user, me and I have not launched inkscape from root account).

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Wow, that certainly must be annoying! It must be something to do with your system :? For me on Windows, that's never happened. I even had to specifically assign Inskcape as my default SVG program.

Have you found Launchpad, Inkscape's bug tracker? I don't understand the hows and whys of the inner workings of Inkscape. But since this is the first I've heard about this, I have to think it's either something specific to your system (which I'm not familiar with) or a bug. So hopefully someone familiar with your setup will be along soon :D

Yes, thank you. I did submit a 'bug report'

Thanks,
Landis.
ps, in Linux, there are 2 sets of 2 files that handle mimetypes and one of them, a system file, defaults.list is actually a symbolic link pointing to a 'gnome' file, /var/cache/gio-2.0/gnome-defaults.list even though I'm running KDE and the other is mimeinfo.cache... The only way I've found to sercomvent inkscape (or kde) changing the files is to copy them to my ~/.local//share/applications/ directory (personal settings directory), but these then don't get updated with changes made by messing with file association or installing new applications... No biggie. Just have to edit and copy new copies, when and if I install something new.
Again, Thanks.

well, it's been about a month since I submitted the bug report at launchpad and there has been No action on it.
Not even a 'it must be you' reply...
Really annoying, seeing sk1 project looks almost as good and in some cases works better (it actually opens CorelDraw, dwg files)...
Hmmm.... disappointing for sure since I've been using InkScape since inception (2003-04'ish)...
Landis.

again, just an fyi. I use openSuSE 12.3x Linux running KDE 4.10.x both up to date.. The actual file being changed by inkscape, that is pointed to by (symlink) defaults.list in /usr/share/applications is /var/cache/gio-2.0/gnome-defaults.list... : )
