Is there a way to disable filters?

Is there a way to turn off the rendering of filters so Inkscape doesn't slow to a crawl?

Yes, there is. By pressing Ctrl+5 on the numpad, the rendering mode will change to no filters display mode.

Also View > Display Mode > No Filters (for those without a numpad).
