[solved] Trace Bitmap Dialog doesn´t appear

Postby Staynex » Tue Dec 15, 2015 10:27 pm

Hello everybody!

I run into trouble with inkscape :/ I hope you can understand my broken english, because I´m from Germany.
I installed Windows 10 and Inkscape Version 0.91. With my last system (Windows 7) I haven´t got any problems with inkscape.

Now my Problem:
So once I import an image (png) and click on it so that it shows as selected, next I click on Path >> Trace Bitmap. Nothing happens. A window is supposed to pop up asking to select from various options. BUT nothing happens. Does anyone has any clue?
It´s not only the Trace Bitmap dialog, the Dialog "Document Settings", in german (Dokumenteneinstellungen), SHIFT-STRG-D, doesn´t appear too :/
Other dialogs like the "Trace Pixel Art" still appear and work correctly :D

What I still tried:

Information about my System:
  • OS: Windows 10 - 64-Bit
  • Ram: 16GB
  • CPU: i7 3.5GHz
  • Graphiccard: Asus STRIX GTX 970 OC
  • Inkscape Version: 0.91

If you need any further information or logs, feel free to contact me :) You still can contact me through this forum, E-Mail (MAIL REMOVED) or Teamspeak (staynex.de). I hope you know how I can SOLVE this problem :)
Thanks for you help!

WOW! Thank you for such a detailed and helpful report about this problem!
(Also, regarding your message itself....well, I guess it sounds like you probably know what you're doing. But just in case, you realize that posting your email address is literally an invitation for spammers (email spam)?)

When dialogs are docked, if you click on the tiny, right-pointing arrow in the top, right corner (which is beside the tine X icon, which is for closing the dialog) the docked dialog is sort of minimized. I think it might be called iconified. Anyway, when you checked for the dialogs being docked, did you also check the area where they are "minimized" or iconified ? The yellow rectangle in this screenshot shows what that looks like.

If dialogs are not docked, and you click the traditional Minimize button on the right side of the titlebar of the dialog, sometimes there is some unexpected behavior. For me, on Win7, 64-bit and Inkscape 0.91, the entire Inkscape window is minimized. It's probably a bug. But I have an old screenshot to show how it used to work, and how it potentially could be working for you. So in the pink circle, you can see how an undocked dialog which has been traditionally minimized is supposed to look. (It's not minimized to the Windows taskbar -- it's minimized to the Inkscape window....sort of.)

In some older versions of Inkscape, sometimes an undocked dialog would open somewhere outside the screen area. There are ways to get them back in the visible portion of the screen, with a few simple steps. Unfortunately, at the moment, I don't remember the steps. But I wrote the instructions in a similar topic, in this forum, not too long ago. So I'll try to search that out.....or remember it.... Anyway, I'll post when I get the info :D

As it turns out, the instructions I was thinking of were how to find the Inkscape window, if it opened outside the screen area. But those steps won't work for a dialog. I think there probably is a way to find them, if that's the problem.

But meanwhile, I wanted to ask if you tried opening with key shortcut? It probably doesn't make any difference, but just to be thorough ;)

I checked that and there´s nothing :/ If I minimize for example the "Trace Pixel Art", I can see it minimized on the right side (like in your screenshot). But the "Trace Bitmap Dialog" still not appear somewhere :/

I checked that too, right now :) But I can´t find the dialog :D If I undock, for example the "Trace Pixel Art" dialog, I have a "standalone" window with this dialog. If I minimize this dialog now (press the - in the right corner), all inkscape windows/dialogs will be minimized. But I can still open it again and use the dialog.

OH MY GOD!!! THAT´S IT!
Thank you sooooo much! I forget that I have connected my TV to my computer, so there was a second screen configured in windows but not active :D So I have connected my second screen and saw the beautiful dialogs <3
Stupid thing.... all other windows opened on my primary screen, but this both windows opened on my second screen, which wasn´t connected.

So i mark this post as SOLVED! Thanks again!

Awesome! But I wonder why those dialogs are on the 2nd screen? Can you drag them back over?

Old topic sorry but must share my 5 cents

this dialog was nowhere to found

use shorcut shift alt b
press and hold the windows key (between ctrl and alt on the left)
press left arrow or right arrow couple of times
tadam!
