Using Inkscape 0.91 on LinuxMint 17.2 & Windows 7.
No matter what I do, I get a white background on image saved as .eps instead of transparent.
an anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
How do I save eps with transparent background?
Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
Does EPS support transparency? I found some info on this page, about 3/4 down: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transpare ... graphic%29
I'm actually not sure of the answer, since I don't completely understand that info. But it seems to lean towards not full support.

Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
The print service I am using (or trying to) requires eps. Most of the other users are using "Illustrator" which does save eps with transparency. So, yes, it does.
Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
No, (standard) EPS does not (reliably) support transparency.
"Illustrator" version of EPS does
But the support outside of Illustrator (even in Corel Draw and others) is random.
A standard solution would be to flatten image
https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/ ... twork.html
but it has drawbacks (very large files, ghost white borders around objects) and I guess this is not what inkscape does.
To use transparency you need to use a format that supports it such as (of course) SVG or PDF >=1.4.
Some say that with a pdf you can use adobe distiller to get a "illustratored" EPS
"Illustrator" version of EPS does
A semi-proprietary technique pioneered in Photoshop and adopted by a number of pre-press applications is to store a clipping path in a standard location of the EPS, and use that for display.

Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
Hmmm. Well then, I guess I switch back to my old print service & stick with vectoring in Inkscape & exporting to png. I appreciate the help & information.
Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
There's a fuller discussion about this, somewhere on this forum, if you wanted to take the time to search it out. Maybe even a couple. I remember the general topic, but I don't remember any details....except that's what prompted me to wonder if EPS supports transparency.
I remember a member who hasn't been active in a while, but she used to save in EPS, and put her work on the kind of sites where people can sell their work. The site would only accept EPS. I'm sure she must have figured out how to use transparency. But since I don't use EPS, I never paid close attention.

Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
Thank you, Brynn. I actually did search that & saw several disussions, but I saw no resolution that worked for me when I tried them. So I was actually hoping someone had some new information. As for me, I don't know why my printer is requiring eps. No one uses it that I am aware of except Adobe.

Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
Hi I was going through the same problem myself, and like you, I couldn't find my answer anywhere, so I'm happy to tell you that I've solved it.
It's funny i was so frustrated with the lack of information, when the answer was right there in my face.
When you save as EPS, the menu will show up and at the bottom it will say:
"Limit export to the object with ID: _______"
SO every object has an ID number and this includes GROUPS. So if you have multiple objects or groups, select all of them to create one group, then right click and select "Object Properties" or CNTRL + SHFT + O, and you'll see their ID number. When you save as EPS, put that number in where it asks you for the ID, and you're good to go.
I hope this solves your problem and I hope this helps anyone else whose been looking for an answer.

Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
I tried to export just the group but that was not working. The resulting EPS still had a white background, not a transparent one.
I also found suggestions of using a clipping path to accomplish that task but wasn't successful. Any tips appreciated. I attached the original file from inkscape and also my try with a clipping path.
Thank you very much!
I'm using inkscape 0.48.4 r9939 on Ubuntu 14.04.05.
BTW: I have no measurement tool in my version, so I had to search for that info to was able to register - not really convenient, but it is a nice idea for spam protection. But maybe you could ask for a position of a tool which is already present in earlier versions.

There are two filtered objects, I'd try taking the filter off and see how that works for you.

Have a nice day.

<offtopic>You can upgrade your Inkscape version to 0.91, if you wish, by using the ppa, see https://inkscape.org/en/download/</offtopic>

Re: How do I save eps with transparent background?
FIGURED IT OUT!!! After tons and tons of trial and error it is actually simple. Move the object to outside of the canvas. This should be improved upon for the saving options, but it is this simple. As far as the settings during saving I did this...
And badabing badaboom! Hope this helps
