Select Last 'Items Selected' and Undo

Postby EarlyBlake » Wed Apr 01, 2009 6:43 pm

Last night I was using the Effects Menu >> >> Pattern a Long Path to approximate a curved perspective in part by changing the tangential offset of where the pattern stared on the curving target path. I was doing it by eye so there was a lot of guessing and undo involved. Each time after I did an undo, I had to reselect the pattern and the target path. In most graphics programs when you 'do' an 'undo', the software automatically re-selects all the items you had selected before you did the last function. There have been plenty of other times this would have come in handy. Like when I did group on a lot of small objects and missed one. I know you can do a second group but I rather just have the one layer of grouping most times.

Does Inkscpae has a select last group of item selected option? There are a select last keyboard short cuts via Tab, but that just seem to cycle through the paths one at a time. It would be good if inkscape reselected the last objects/paths selected, since you often do multiple operations on the same set of paths in a row.

As far as I know, there's no option for this, although I've also wanted it.

There is a work-around for the grouping example you gave, though. After realizing you missed an object for the group, instead of Undo, you should Ungroup (Shift-Ctrl-G). That will remove the group, and select all of the elements of the group just removed. Then you Shift-select the one you missed to add it to the selection, and Group (Ctrl-G). Quick and easy.

I'm waiting that thing so much! Facing with a big troubles when drawing with my Wacom tablet.
Show case:
Select calligraphic tool, then draw circle with brushstrokes one by one holding Shift to get one shape. One make wrong brushstroke you press Undo and loose selection... then you have take mouse to select all again or do it with your tablet (the last is really difficult and usually annoying because you may occasionally move selection).

So I don't think reselect after Undo action (or action for reselecting last selection) is really hard to implement (and may be activate it with checkbox somewhere in Settings), and suggest it will be helpful for many.

I'm also looking for this option. Adding selection changes to the undo levels is exactly what I think the devs should add. For raster/pixel graphics, I use GIMP, and that functionality is fully incorporated (as it should be). I remember my delight when I first realized Gimp preserved my precious, meticulously picked selection changes!! Undo/redo in Inkscape should do the same.

Where should we make this recommendation / beg for this feature? :) Oh, found it! https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/ (That's according to the FAQ on this forum.)

Actually, I posted it in the questions part, here: https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/246315

Thanks!

For the original post the pattern along path live path effect, applied with a clone may be the solve.

Node selecting -and re-selecting- can take much time, the ability of undoing deselecting would be really handy in cases, like in blender.

But the mentioned gimp example may not be the best; you can have more possibilities if you make a layer mask instead of small modifications in a selection.
