Hello,
I've Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I have installed Inkscape-0.48.4 and the program works well.
I tried to set Inkscape as default program to open my .emf and .wmf files but when I click on "Open with\Choose default program" and browse to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Inkscape\Inkscape.exe", this doesn't do anything, Inkscape never appears in the program list. Inkscape is also not referenced in the "Default program" list of the Control panel and there is apparently no way to make it appear in.
A look in Google suggests that it could be linked to a registry problem and that Inkscape is maybe not correctly installed but I tried to download and re-install it without any changes.
Is anyone have an idea to solve this annoying problem?
Thank you
Inkscape cannot be set as default program in Windows 7

Try with Properties then (Opens with:... and button to the right - Change...).
When you browse to the Inkscape.exe you should check "Apply" at the bottom and also check for "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". This would also replace the current icon for the wmf file with the Inkscape icon.

I tried but it still doesn't work.
Inkscape.exe never appears in the list of available "Open with" programs. Even, Inkscape is correctly installed and well listed in the "Control Panel/Uninstall a program".

Why would it be so important to have Inkscape listed in "Default programs" if you have "Chose..." option?
Use the "Chose...", find the Inkscape.exe, check for the previously mentioned "check points" and voila!
p.s.
Do you have other user accounts on that machine? You do know about administrator accounts and different permissions related to different types of accounts, right?

Re: Inkscape cannot be set as default program in Windows 7
In general, when you choose "Open with" option, you find the program in the explorer and click ok and then the new program appears in the "Open with" list, but here the problem is that when I click on Inkscape.exe, nothing appends, Inkscape icon does not appear in the menu. I cannot choose it.
I tried to click on "Inkview.exe" which is in the same folder than Inkscape.exe and then the icon of Inkview appears in the "Open with" menu, but it does not open the file (what I think is normal).
I am administrator and there is no other user account on my machine. I have already chosen other default programs without any problem.
