NOOB QUERY: just want to create a perfect circle

Postby eknirb » Sat Dec 22, 2012 6:29 am

I have an image, and want a circle out of the center of it. How do I do this?

also, to make sure it's created as a perfect circle, hold down the ctrl key plus the circle shape key, and it will be perfect. Even if you re-size it later, be sure to hold the ctrl key down while re-sizing. I got messed up for so long until I learned that little tidbit!
Another little tidbit to know if your circle is perfect (I still do this when I forget to hold down the ctrl key) - select your circle, then hit the right (or left) flip arrow, while watching the circle on your screen, if you can tell that it changed sizes, then it's no longer a perfect circle, that alone has saved me a lot of headaches.
Welcome, enjoy Inkscape!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

So you have an image. Is it a photo? When you say you "want a circle out of the center of it", do you mean that you want a cookie cut out, so that your final result is the cookie? Or is the final result, the rectangular image with a circular hole in it?

I have an image of a cat sitting in a box. I want to lift out just the center of the photo so all that's left is a circular image of the center of the photo.

Ah-HA!
Draw a circle around the area you want. Select the circle and the image together. Then Path menu > Intersection. Everything else except that part of the photo inside the circle will disappear :D

Have fun :D

Brynn, what V. of Inkscape are you using? None of my versions will perform booleans on a photo... :(

If I needed to do this I would have to draw the circle on top of the photo, select both, and do object menu>clip>set.

You could be right, druban. And clipping is a suitable technique as well!

But I used the word "photo" a bit prematurely. The way it's described, it still might not be a photo. That part is unclear, as yet :D

Ah, well if it is indeed a photo, or any raster format image, then path intersection won't work. But you can select both by clicking on one, then hold Shift key while you click on the other. Then Object menu > Clip > Set.

If it's a vector image, you can use Path menu > Intersection, after selecting them.

Not sure what you mean here... maybe just a misunderstanding, but intersection will never work for this purpose unless by 'image' you mean a single path... while intersection allows a multipath selection, it results in only a single path where all the paths overlap. If even one path does not overlap all the other paths the result will be no path at all. In any case any 'image' will be lost.
Maybe if you provide an example of the solution you are suggesting?

Well, like I said, I think you're right about using clipping. Clipping is probably the better technique, until we have more info about the "image". And even then, clipping may still be the best thing to do.
